Amy Reading Crohn's cat to students

Amy Dowden reads our 'Meet our Crohn's and Colitis cats' book

Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden helped to raise awareness of Crohn's and Colitis by reading our new children's story to her Art in Motion Dance Academy students so they better understand the conditions.

Amy, who is an ambassador for the charity and was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease when she was 19 years old, organised a book reading at her dance academy in Cradley Heath to help educate the children about her condition and to answer any questions they had about her disease.

Meet our Crohn's and Colitis cats, created with illustrator Thomas Wolfe who lives with Crohn's Disease himself, uses cats as a metaphor for looking after your disease. The story is available as a book and an animation, and the book can be personalised as the reader decides whether the characters, Riley and Owen, have either Crohn's, Colitis or IBD Unclassified, depending on their own circumstances.

Amy makes a cameo appearance in the book. The main character Riley sees Amy on television talking about her Crohn's, inspiring the courage to talk about their condition with their friends and to reach for their dreams.

I'm really honoured to be part of this incredible book 'Meet our Crohn's and Colitis cats' and to appear on my very own page. You should check out my lovely yellow ballroom dress. Hopefully it inspires young children, teenagers or anyone who has been diagnosed not to lose sight of their dreams and not to be scared to talk about it.

Through age appropriate, relatable information, this new resource aims to empower children to make the right choices for themselves as well as learning better self-care as there is currently no resource that meets this need. The story is available for free from Crohn's & Colitis UK and is for children aged 7-11 living with Crohn's or Colitis themselves, or who have a parent or family member living with the disease.

I think this new children's resource is incredible and will really help children and families talk and understand the conditions more. Living with Crohn's or Colitis can be hard at times and difficult to talk about. This will get conversations started with children and their loved ones and encourage them to share how they are feeling and how they are coping with the conditions.
