Tick the Gift Aid box when you donate

It’s Gift Aid Awareness Day on 7 October and we want to make sure all our supporters and donors know about this extra source of income for our charity.

Gift Aid is a tax break that increases the value of your donations and sponsorship by 25p for every £1 you donate. For example, if you donate £10, we’ll get £12.50. The extra money comes from the government so there’s no additional cost to the donor. You just need to opt into the scheme by confirming that you are a UK taxpayer.

Around 60% of people who have donated to us this year have made a Gift Aid declaration and so far, we have been able to claim over £250,000 as a result. All you need to do is to tick the Gift Aid box on an online or paper donation form, or fill in our online form. It will then apply to any donations you make in the future or have made in the past four years.

It means that we’ll have more money to spend on supporting the Crohn’s and Colitis community, improving treatments and ultimately finding a cure.

“We’re really grateful to all our supporters who’ve already signed up to Gift Aid,” says Susannah Girt, our Supporter Engagement Assistant. “By taking the time to tick the box and give your details, you’re making a significant impact on our charity.”

Box-out: Gift Aid explained

Money that an individual donates to charity is exempt from tax, so we can claim back the tax the donor has already paid on it. There are some rules though.

  • The donation must be made by you from your own personal money. It can’t be money you’ve collected from other people, for example at a fundraising event.
  • You must have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax in the year of donation to cover the amount we claim back from the government.
  • You need to give your home address when you sign up.
