Jake was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at 13 years old and has been volunteering for Crohn's & Colitis UK in a number of ways since 18. He is a member of the Readers Panel, which involves reviewing our information publications to make sure the views of people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease are represented.
"I wanted to give something back by volunteering"
Why did you get involved as a volunteer?
I decided to get involved as a volunteer at Crohn's & Colitis UK for a couple of reasons. The first reason being I have Crohn's Disease and was diagnosed at the age of thirteen in November 2007. My Crohn's Disease has caused me to have many flare ups, to take a variety of medication, to be on a number of diets including Modulen Liquid Diet and to have surgery. My family, friends and the community have done an amazing job supporting me throughout, so I wanted to give something back by volunteering at the brilliant charity Crohn's & Colitis UK.
In addition to this I study English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Hertfordshire, and also have an online space 'Jake Borrett's Writing Blog' where I publish articles including those raising awareness for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. I was therefore drawn to the writing role the Readers Panel offers.
What has been your biggest achievement or highlight in your volunteering role?
If someone with either Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis benefits from reading an Inflammatory Bowel Disease information document or leaflet I have helped to develop then this is certainly a highlight.
What three words would you use to describe your volunteering experience?
The three words I would use to describe my volunteering experience would be creative, informative and inspirational.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering with Crohn's & Colitis UK?
If someone is thinking about volunteering with Crohn's & Colitis UK I would say they should go for it. If by helping, either big or small, makes a positive difference to someone else's experiences with Inflammatory Bowel Disease then it is certainly worth it.
1-12 June 2016 is #VolunteersWeek and we are celebrating our wonderful volunteers and highlighting the different ways you can show your support.
