World Toilet Day 2025

Toilet access is a big issue for people with Crohn’s and Colitis, so much so that we know 9 in 10 people with the conditions plan their journeys around whether or not they’ll be able to get to a loo. That’s a huge consideration, and knowing you have a safe, clean, accessible bathroom available can make all the difference to your day. That’s why World Toilet Day, observed every year on November 19th, is more than just a date on the calendar, it’s a powerful reminder of the role toilets play in health, dignity, and inclusion.

We spoke to Callum who lives with Crohn's about how toilet access impacts his day to day life.

"Toilet access affects my planning and decision making, especially around my social calendar or any trips away. It doesn't necessarily affect my ability to do these things, but it means increased planning and thought.

I often think in advance where toilets may be, and it can be incredibly frustrating when they are not available, therefore impacting timings and plans. This can happen in lots of places, including trains and shopping centres. I have to take extra care to plan any trips away that I might be taking, such as using transport like a train or a plane, and planning carefully where I'll be staying, to make sure it has suitable amenities for me.

I often carry additional underwear and toilet paper with me, due to the anxiety around lack of appropriate public toilet provision. I also frequently find that public toilet access is limited in the UK. Upkeep and standards seem reduced, with a lack of toilet paper, unsuitable locks and a lack of cleanliness. In men's toilets particularly, there is a limited amount of stalls which can often affect waiting time."

We’re really proud to be Loo Of The Year Awards charity partner for the second year running, as they are encouraging the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washrooms. These standards include, accessibility, hygiene, repair and facilities. With their support, we’ve been amplifying awareness across the industry about the importance of clean, accessible toilets, especially for people living with Crohn’s and Colitis, who often face urgent and unpredictable toilet needs. We’re thrilled to continue this work and shine a spotlight on these issues at the upcoming awards ceremony in January.

We’ve also been working with The Cheeky Panda to raise awareness of Crohn’s and Colitis and to raise vital funds. Their eco-friendly bamboo toilet paper isn’t just kind to the planet, it’s helping support our mission too. The Cheeky Panda have kindly offered a 20% discount code for our supporters and are donating 10% from the sales when this discount code is used. Use the code SUPERSOFT20 to get your discount.
