Crohn's & Colitis UK have granted over £360,000 in their Living with IBD Research Awards for 2015. Four innovative projects have been selected for funding to investigate ways to improve the lives of those living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
£360,000 awarded to innovative research projects for people living with IBD
For over 30 years, Crohn's & Colitis UK has been at the forefront of ground breaking research on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). In 2015, the charity has been able to grant more money to research than in previous years to projects that offer value to people living with IBD, value for money and originality.
The following research projects have had funding committed by Crohn's & Colitis UK in 2015:
The University of Hertfordshire will receive £115,000 to study exercise and IBD, with the aim of developing a safe and effective exercise programme for people with Crohn's Disease.
A clearer understanding of the effects of different types of exercise training in adults with Crohn's Disease is needed so that safe and effective exercise programmes can be designed.
Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust will receive £8,490 to look at how changing behaviour can affect fatigue in patients with IBD, in the hope that it will find a way to reduce fatigue.
Our ultimate aim is to find a simple intervention to empower patients to deal with the difficult task of living with IBD and the fatigue this can bring.
Kings College London will receive £115,000 to measure the burden of food on quality of life in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This research project will look at how many people with IBD have their quality of life affected by food in order to develop tools that will aim to help them.
We do not know how many people with IBD are affected by problems with food-related quality of life, nor what the most common problems are and why and when they occur.
As well as awarding our 'Living with IBD' Research Awards this year, Crohn's & Colitis UK have awarded a Health Services Award.
The University of Liverpool will receive £126,234 to maximize the value of the IBD Registry. The researchers are developing and testing new ways of recording and analysing information about IBD patients.
This project will develop and test new ways to capture, link and analyse information about routine IBD care.
Improving the lives of everyone affected by Crohn's and Colitis is a main focus for the charity. We are thrilled to be investing in these research projects that aim to identify useful ways of helping more people with IBD to manage their conditions. These investments into research are critical if we want to improve lives now and see a world in which people's lives are not limited by Crohn's and Colitis. IBD patients can be assured that the charity will continue to support high quality research in the future in fighting the battle against Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
