New Chair for Medical Research Awards Panel

Published: 12 July 2019

We are excited to announce that Dr Barney Hawthorne, Consultant Gastroenterologist and cyclist extraordinaire, is the new Chair of our Medical Research Awards Panel.

The Medical Research Awards Panel reviews funding applications for research into any aspect of Crohn's or Colitis relevant to a better understanding of the causes or mechanisms of these conditions as well as better treatment, including surgery, for people living with them.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Barney Hawthorne as Chair of the Medical Research Awards Panel. As a previous member of this panel, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this vital role as we intensify our research programme to fund world class research towards a better understanding of the causes and best treatments of Crohn’s and Colitis and, ultimately, to find a cure for these conditions.

Barney’s support for the charity doesn’t stop there.  He also sits on the Research Strategy & Funding Committee and is the Chair of our Health Professionals Advisory Panel.

I am delighted to be taking on the role of chair of the medical research awards committee. The UK is a world leader in Inflammatory Bowel Disease research currently, and a number of ground-breaking and innovative studies have been funded through Crohn’s & Colitis UK in the past few years. Despite the amazing work in fund-raising done by the charity, there is always need for more funding as so many high quality research applications are received each year.

Dr Hawthorne has also been cycling the length of Wales (242miles) from Chepstow to Anglesey with a friend over the last 4 days, to raise awareness and funding to support research into Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
