650 participants have been recruited for the IBD BioResource study being carried out by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
Great uptake for IBD Bioresource study
Led by Dr Miles Parkes at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, the IBD BioResource study has so far enrolled patients from its pilot hospitals and there will be further recruitment as it's rolled out nationwide over the coming months.
The focus of IBD BioResource is a major new genetic study aiming to identify markers of disease risk, IBD behaviour and treatment response. The goal is to accelerate research in Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis and build on recent major advances in understanding of the genetic basis of these conditions.
The IBD BioResource will be part of the NIHR BioResource - comprising volunteers from around the UK who are willing to be approached to participate in research studies and trials on the basis of their genetic make-up.
It is making good progress and aims to continue the steady expansion of recruitment across the UK. The project has been very well received with clinical teams as well as patients; up to the start of September 2016 over 70 hospital teams have been in touch to express an interest in contributing by recruiting their patients to the panel.
They are now open and recruiting to the study at the following hospital sites:
- Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter
- Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham
- Newcastle Royal Infirmary, Newcastle
- Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn
- Hull Royal Infirmary, Hull
- Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury
- Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester
- West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds
- Salford Royal Infirmary, Salford
- Colchester Hospital, Colchester
The following sites are due to be opened within the next 2 - 3 months:
- St James University Hospital, Leeds
- Royal Hallamshire, Sheffield
- University College Hospital, London
- Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, Luton
- Torbay Hospital, Torquay
- St Mark’s Northwick Park, London
- Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Norwich
- Chesterfield Royal, Chesterfield
- Ipswich Hospital, Ipswich
- James Paget, Lowestoft
- Bradford Royal Infirmary, Bradford
- Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford
- Kings Mill Hospital, Sutton in Ashfield
- Warrington and Harlton Hospital, Warrington
- Northampton General, Northampton
- South Tyneside District Hospital, South Shields
If the hospital at which you receive your IBD care is listed and you would like to participate, please indicate your interest to your clinical care team.
The IBD BioResource will be a major platform to drive IBD research over the next 10 years and hopefully deliver substantial advances in IBD treatment. We look forward to the ongoing interaction. We want to say a massive thank you to Crohn's and Colitis UK, and to the whole IBD community, for supporting the project. We have been bowled over by the interest and committment and appreciate the patience of people who have expressed interest as it can take some time to roll it out across sites.
