With meningitis being in the news lately, some people with Crohn’s or Colitis may be worried about how it affects them. You may have questions about whether you can have the vaccination or who to contact for advice. We’ve gathered the latest information below to help you during this time.

Meningitis

Meningitis is an infection of the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It is not a common infection, but it can affect anyone. It mostly affects babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.

Some early symptoms can be similar to having the flu or a tummy bug. Symptoms come on suddenly. It can very serious and needs treatment quickly.

Meningitis Now has information on symptoms to look out for based on age group

The NHS has information on how meningitis is treated.

What we know about the outbreak so far

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have reported an outbreak of meningitis in the Canterbury and East Kent area. They say that the strain associated with this outbreak is meningitis B. This is also known as MenB.

There is specific advice for people in the area who may have been exposed.

The Government are monitoring the situation and advice may change. You can keep up to date with the latest government announcements about the meningitis outbreak here.

MenB vaccine

From 2015, the MenB vaccine has been offered as part of routine childhood immunisations. The MenB vaccine is given to children when they're eight weeks, 12 weeks and one year old.

Most people will not be eligible for the MenB vaccine on the NHS. This includes:

  • People with Crohn’s or Colitis
  • People taking immunosuppressant medicines to treat Crohn’s or Colitis

The MenB vaccine is not a live vaccine. You may be able to pay to have the MenB vaccine privately.

Getting help

If you may have come into contact with anyone with meningitis or have any concerns contact your GP, IBD team or NHS111. They can advise you on your individual risk and any action to take.
