New grants awarded for paediatric research

Published: 12 January 2017

£40,000 has been committed to four paediatric IBD projects funded jointly by Crohn's & Colitis UK and the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenteology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN).

Crohn’s and Colitis UK has partnered with the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) to co-fund four start-up research projects.

The overall aim is to encourage ground-breaking research in Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis - the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - in children and young people.

Through the funding of these new areas of research it is hoped that researchers will go on to obtain further more substantial funding in the future.

This research will look at how biomarkers for Crohn’s Disease may help identify the best treatments for children, how the faecal calprotectin testing could predict treatment response, why children experience pain in IBD even in remission, and whether a child’s gut fungi affects their development of Crohn’s Disease.
