New guidelines for Crohn's and Colitis

Published: 18 October 2019

The guidelines have been developed by a group of experts who work in Crohn’s and Colitis care, including gastroenterologists, IBD nurse specialists and colorectal surgeons.

We also provided support and advice and so did you, through two surveys that asked your opinion on important areas of Crohn’s and Colitis research for the future. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

The BSG Guidelines were developed by a large group of doctors, nurses and patients who thoroughly examined worldwide research into Crohn’s and Colitis. The guideline is freely available to everyone, and includes lots of recommendations, diagrams and top tips to support doctors and nurses in hospitals and general practice to work in partnership with patients to provide the highest quality care in Crohn’s and Colitis.

The BSG guidelines are extremely detailed and will help healthcare professionals on topics including drug treatments, surgery, as well as pain and fatigue and the psychological side of the condition.

The aim is to help doctors provide the best care for their patients, with clear and specific advice on how best to support and treat their patients.

The publication of the BSG guidelines is a fantastic achievement, and testament to the hard work of many people working together, all of whom want the best outcomes for people with Crohn’s and Colitis. This brilliant resource will support clinicians in treating their Crohn’s and Colitis patients with clear recommendations and advice included. Used alongside the new IBD Standards, also published this year, we hope that consistent, high-quality care soon becomes a reality for everyone in the UK living with Crohn’s or Colitis.

They are designed to be used alongside the new IBD Standards, which outline what high-quality care looks like at every point of your journey, from when you first experience symptoms, to any surgery, to your ongoing care.
