New spotlight project with family doctors brings IBD centre-stage

Published: 10 May 2017

The aims of the Spotlight Project are to improve understanding of IBD among GPs and to produce a toolkit and educational materials which will help to speed up diagnosis and improve the support that GPs are able to give their IBD patients.

We’re delighted that the College is partnering with Crohn’s & Colitis UK to raise awareness of this important clinical area in general practice. This collaborative project aims to support our members and their practice teams in the identification and appropriate management for patients suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease throughout the UK. I look forward to being involved in this project, and following its progress and the impact it has on GPs, our teams and our patients.

Dr Kevin Barrett, a GP Commissioner who has Crohn’s Disease himself has been appointed as Clinical Champion for Inflammatory Bowel Disease to lead this Spotlight Project, supported by the Royal College of GPs and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.

I am thrilled to be working with the RCGP and Crohn's & Colitis UK as their Clinical Champion for the IBD Spotlight Project. This is an exciting opportunity and will enable me to use the experience I have gained as a Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology at Hertfordshire Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group and as a committee member of the Primary Care Society for Gastroenterology. I am looking forward to raising the profile of IBD and helping develop tools to assist primary care to identify patients with IBD sooner, manage them more proficiently, and provide better holistic support to them and their families.

An expert project advisory group made up of patient and professional representatives is guiding Crohn’s & Colitis UK in this work, with wider input from patient and GP reference groups.
