NICE approves biologics for moderate to severe UC

Published: 12 December 2014

NICE has today recommended infliximab, adalimumab and golimumab as maintenance therapy for moderate to severe UC, where conventional treatments (including steroids, mercaptopurine and azathioprine) have failed.

This follows its interim guidance, issued in September, that these treatments were not considered to be a cost-effective use of NHS resources.

Over 100 of you responded to the public consultation that followed and we also drew on your comments for our Crohn's & Colitis UK submission. Patient experts nominated by Crohn's & Colitis UK also contributed significantly to the Committee's understanding of UC.

NICE considered all of the evidence, including from other organisations, such as the British Society of Gastroenterology and UK Clinical Pharmacy Association, and the manufacturers, and has subsequently revised its decision.

This recommendation grants access to additional treatment options, where these are needed, for the maintenance of UC and brings this in line with guidance for Crohn's Disease.

It is a landmark decision which may not have come about without your voices -thank you to everyone who took the time and trouble to send us your views and experiences and to register these directly with NICE.

I am delighted by this decision from NICE. Infliximab has been hugely important to me in that it has allowed me to regain control of my life. I was also very happy to be involved with the appraisal process and felt that what I had to say was listened to by the committee. It is great to know that, going forward, more people with Ulcerative Colitis will reap the benefits of these treatments as I have done.
