Our response to the NICE biologics review for moderate to severe Ulcerative Colitis

Published: 16 October 2014

Thank you very much to all those who sent us comments for our response to the NICE review of infliximab, adalimumab and golimumab for moderate to severe UC.

We also sent NICE a large number of separate individual submissions which, collectively, make a very powerful case for biologics to be available for maintenance therapy for UC. Responses will be considered at a meeting of the NICE Appraisal Committee on 28th October and we will post an update on developments after this has taken place.

This review does not affect the guidance for Crohn's Disease, for which infliximab and adalimumab are approved, or the guidance for severe acute UC, which permits three induction doses of infliximab. These remain in place regardless of the outcome.

Additional doses of infliximab and the use of adalimumab and golimumab for moderate to severe UC are not approved by NICE, except through participation in clinical trials. Availability is therefore dependent on clinicians and local funding decisions. We want these biologics to be available to anyone with UC for whom conventional therapy has failed, for maintenance as well as induction therapy.

While NICE is conducting this review and, should they ultimately decide against this, they say that people currently receiving treatment should be able to continue to do so until they and their clinician feel it is appropriate to stop.
