Sainsbury's to install new accessible toilet signs in 603 stores

Published: 07 November 2017

Sainsbury's have today officially announced that they will be rolling out new accessible toilet signage from next year, raising awareness that not every disability is visible.

They are the final major supermarket to sign up to Crohn’s & Colitis UK’s campaign to roll out our new accessible toilet signage.

Between January and March 2018, the supermarket giant will be installing the toilet signage in all 603 of their nationwide stores to help reduce stigma for those living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other invisible disabilities.

100% success rate with our supermarket campaign

This now means that over 2,500 stores across the UK in AsdaTescoMorrison’sWaitrose and now Sainsbury’s will be using signage promoting that not every disability is visible, helping tackle stigma and raising awareness of Crohn’s and Colitis

Inspiration for the not every disability is visible campaign is credited to the many people living with Crohn’s or Colitis; notably 11-year-old Grace Warnock. Grace’s Sign can be found in many national locations, including the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh Airport.

Our vision is to be the most inclusive retailer where people love to work and shop. We’re always looking at ways to create an environment that meets the needs of our customers and we’re delighted to be installing these signs in our store toilets across the UK.

We would really like to thank Sainsbury’s for all their fantastic engagement with us, being the final supermarket to join our campaign supporting their customers and changing mind-sets that disabilities are not always visible.

This would not have been possible without the huge support of the IBD community and the success of the campaign is testament to the power of your voice.

Now that Crohn’s & Colitis UK have had a 100% success rate with our supermarkets campaign, the charity is now calling for our signs to be placed on publicly-available accessible toilets within high footfall public areas such as travel hubs.

Support us with Travel with IBD, our next phase of the campaign, which has already been hugely successful and our signs can now be found in airports, train stations and service stations all over the country.
