The Welsh Parliament’s Health and Social Care Committee has published its report, Supporting People with Chronic Conditions, urging the government to take stronger action to ensure those living with chronic conditions receive the support they need.
Supporting people living with chronic conditions in Wales
In 2023, the Health and Social Care Committee launched an inquiry to examine the challenges people with chronic conditions, such as Crohn’s and Colitis, face in accessing healthcare. The committee gathered evidence from organisations like Crohn’s & Colitis UK and directly from those affected.
We are pleased that the committee has taken on board our recommendations:
- A workforce plan for specialist nurses, ensuring the sustainability of their services and equal access across Wales.
- Better signposting to mental health support at the point of diagnosis.
- Mental health training for all healthcare staff working with people with chronic conditions.
- Incorporating patient perspectives into ongoing medical education.
- Stronger collaboration between the Welsh Government, local authorities, and third-sector organisations to address broader social issues beyond health, such as housing, debt, and employment.
The Health and Social Care Committee also requested updates from Welsh Government on important pieces of work, including digital projects to improve communication between different parts of the NHS to improve the co-ordination of care.

Reports like this help us to raise awareness and pressure governments to act. The Welsh Government will now respond to the report, and it will be debated in the Welsh Parliament later this year.
