I knew from an early age I would leave Crohn’s & Colitis UK something in my Will for helping me with my Crohn’s and for all the information and support they have given me. It was a no-brainer.

For 77-year-old John T Goy from Scunthorpe, supporting Crohn’s & Colitis UK in his Will was a nobrainer. After 54 years with Crohn’s, he hopes a cure may one day be possible.

I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s by a surgeon at Leeds General Infirmary. I was sent there because the doctors at my local hospital had no idea what was wrong with me.

Since 1972 I’ve had three bowel resection operations and I’m awaiting a fourth. Unfortunately, in late 2021, I started having strictures and small bowel blockages, constipation and uncontrollable diarrhoea, which has led to stays in hospital. But I’ve accepted it’s all part of having Crohn’s. 

I believe in positive mental attitude, but in my younger days I didn’t practise it; I just carried on as best I could. In those days very little was known about Crohn’s so I did lots of research at the local library, always believing that the more I knew about this incurable condition the better armed I was to deal with it.

I hope that my gift will help towards finding a cure for Crohn’s and Colitis, which are debilitating conditions for both young and old. For me, having other incurable conditions makes it that much harder.

I also hope some of the values I hold close to my heart, kindness, friendship, honesty and courage, will live on through this gift. One of my dear friends often tells me I am ‘one in a million’. What a compliment for being me.
