Update on Crohn's & Colitis UK Research Grants

Published: 02 September 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has affected many charities over the past months and, sadly, this includes Crohn's & Colitis UK. The significant drop in income that we have experienced, in addition to increased demand for our services, means that we had to review our position regarding research funding in 2020.

Existing Grants

Firstly, we're excited to say that we are now in a position to re-start all of our existing research grants, after a period of suspension that was announced in April. This is only possible because of all your fantastic donations, fundraising, and volunteering - thank you!

As we move forward, we want to support our amazing researchers as much as possible so we're agreeing extensions to cover the disruption caused by the pandemic and our funding suspension.

We can't wait to see the outcome of these projects and what they offer towards improving the lives of people with Crohn's and Colitis!

Crohn's & Colitis UK remains committed to supporting research that improves the lives of people living with Crohn's and Colitis and, ultimately, to finding a cure. We are delighted that we are able to resume funding our existing grants and we hope that we will soon be in a position to consider funding new grants again in the future.

New Research Grants

We have made the difficult decision that we cannot fund any new research grants in 2020. Although we hope and plan to fund new research in 2021, it is not yet certain what form that would take or how much we might be able to offer.

Therefore, we believe that the clearest course of action that we can take is to:

  • Withdraw the Pain Collaborative Call that was opened back in March, and
  • Cancel the assessment of applications to our 2019/2020 Open Call, which was close to reaching completion as we went into lockdown.

Although far from our long term goals for research, this plan hopes to offer clarity to researchers and allows Crohn's & Colitis UK to survive this turbulent time, which will allow us to support important life-changing research for a long time to come.

We know this may come as disappointing news, but we couldn't have got this far without you, our supporters, and it is only with your help that we can move forward and fund more research in the future.
